Art on the Fringe

I figured I’d make a page to share some of my AI-generated art cause I like it. And if I’m sharing my stuff, then I figured I would share some of Erin’s stuff, too. Cause her stuff is awesome! And if I’m sharing Erin’s stuff, then I should share what I did to Erin’s stuff.

Which sounds much dirtier than it is.

Shane’s AI Art

Most of these were created using Stable Diffusion AI. Sometimes I bounce back and forth between Stable Diffusion and Photoshop. You will notice there is a distinct commonality between images; these are the result of variations on the same theme (sci-fi botanical garden for instance). For me, AI art is a cycle of continuing refinement. I’ll produce dozens of images and keep a handful. Most are the product of prompts of my own making, but for some, the base prompt was from another artist that I altered, usually extensively, to make my own image.

Eventually, I’ll organize this content into categories or something. But for right now, this is good enough.

Erin’s Mandalas and a Touch of AI

Erin started coloring in adult coloring books a few years ago. She finds it soothing, and it gives her something to do with her hands while watching TV. I think she had a great eye for color, and does a wonderful job with these.

I took a few of Erin’s mandalas and used the AI to make them something else. A brooch. A stained glass window. A tile mosaic. A cake. Just as examples of what AI can do with a “real image” as a base. AI art doesn’t need to be generated from scratch.

I created a separate page for Erin’s mandalas and my AI reimaging of them if you are interested in seeing more of those.

Variations on the Eye

If you have interacted with Sex on the Fringe on social media, you may recognize the green-and-blue eye icon I’ve used for the past three years. I decided to give it an upgrade with AI, and I think the new version does an even better job representing the original intention, nebulous though that intention is. The universal eye of the divine that watched over us. The third eye…open. “I see you, friend. I see you, and I am here for you.” All of these or none at all.

These are some of the variations I really liked but did not end up using. And examples of what happened when I tried using two eye variations together.

The blye eye-con represents the site as a whole, but I also use it with my author by-line. This seemed fair considering 95% of the words on this webpage are mine. But Erin has always had her own icon, so just as I AI-ified mine, I did the same to hers, and these were the results. For her: an amulet; a magical ward to protect against harm.
